Car Seats for Kids & Shuttle Service??

Postby Chereya » Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:13 pm

I just saw this posted on a shuttle web site... do I need to check my kids' car seats in as baggage just so they can use it on the shuttle to and from the airport?? :( Does anyone have experience with this? Is a car seat required for bus transportation? Has anyone been denied service by the shuttle driver because they had a small child who did not have a car seat? My kids will be 3 and 5 when we go and they are both definitely under 60 lbs each.

================================

Notes for Traveling With Children:
If your child is under the minimum age/weight standards set by the state of California, you, the parent or guardian traveling with the child, is required to supply an approved car seat for each child that the law applies to. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian traveling with the child to make sure that the child is in compliance with the California Child Passenger Restraint Requirements.

Note that the California law changed on January 1, 2002.

New California Child Passenger Restraint Requirements
Effective January 1, 2002

(Excerpts from the California Vehicle Code)

27360.
(a) No parent or legal guardian, when present in a motor vehicle, as defined in Section 27315, shall permit his or her child or ward to be transported upon a highway in the motor vehicle without providing and properly securing the child or ward, in a child passenger restraint system meeting applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards unless the child or ward is at least one of the following:
(1) Six years of age or older.
(2) Weighs 60 pounds or more.

(b) No driver shall transport on a highway any child in a motor vehicle, as defined in Section 27315, without providing and properly securing the child in a child passenger restraint system meeting applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards unless the child is at least one of the following:
(1) Six years of age or older.
(2) Weighs 60 pounds or more.

Thats a good question. Looking forward to hearing the answer on this one. Here they just changed the law on July 1st, too any Child under the age of 9 ( or 4 foot 9 inches ) must be in a booster seat. Here that doesnt apply to a bus as they don't have seat belts. Shuttles to Anaheim don't have seat belts therefore you would'nt need a booster or car seat. Without a seatbelt a car seat makes no sense.

I've seen the car seat disclaimers on both the Super Shuttle and Karmel Shuttle web sites. They may be posted there "officially" to cover their back sides in regards to gov't regulations. What I'm hoping is that in practice, they do not necessarily require you to have it. What happens to parents who did not read the notice and didn't bring their children's car seats? Do they get turned away? Inquiring minds want to know, lol!

Well, like kd said, over here in BC, any child under the age of 9 who is under 4'9" height must be sitting in a booster seat now. Our buses and skytrain don't have seatbelts so carseats aren't required. So, with that being said, when we went to Disneyland at the end of May (this year), I didn't think to bring our son's car seat. My concern was about being on the plane and if I should bring it for the plane ride but people told me it wasn't necessary so we left it at home.

Our children are ages 10, 7 and 3. So, even over here, our 7 year old is still required to sit in a booster seat. And our 3 year old was actually still only 2 when we went and he did pretty well just sitting on the seat by himself. Sometimes you might just have to hang on to the little'er ones if traffic is go and stop because the bus stopping suddenly makes it kind of jerk forward and they don't weigh enough to stay as stabalized as you and me. My little guy never did fall off his seat but it makes them more comfortable. Also, the one time he wanted to sit on my lap, the busdriver asked that he not because it was safer for him to sit in his own seat.

There are seatbelts on the long haul buses...our bus from the airport to the hotel, Legoland, San Diego...those kind of trips. However, we rode a Karmel shuttle once and I don't recall seeing seatbelts on it.

None of the busdrivers we had mentioned anything about car seats at all and I noticed other families with children as young as ours didn't have a car seat for their trip either. We even took a cab and our cab driver didn't have a problem with our littlest one not having a car seat.

Hope that helps.
