How to get to closest Grocery market?

I like to have a selection of foods available for quick mini meals for my diabetic daughter. I can't order from Vons because I am Canadian, so I was thinking I would go for a quick shop on our first day. We won't have a car so we would get a taxi back... what are our options?

There is a Vons store about a mile away from us, and this thread has some good information, too! :]
